Abstract

Used cooking oil from households and food businesses in Kalibaru Village, North Jakarta, is still partly discarded into drains or household waste. An initial assessment of the Pesona Betawi group showed that the participants' mean knowledge score was only 45 out of 100, none had ever converted used cooking oil into biodiesel, and no feedstock collection system existed. This community service program, supported by the CSR program of PT PLN Indonesia Power UBP Priok, aimed to improve the partners' knowledge and skills in converting used cooking oil into biodiesel through transesterification. The program was conducted from 1 to 10 February 2026 using a participatory approach consisting of a needs assessment, education, demonstration and hands-on conversion using a semi-pilot biodiesel reactor, mentoring, and evaluation through pre- and post-tests, observation, and production records. The mean knowledge score increased from 45 to 90 (N-gain of 0.82; high category). One batch formulated with 75 liters of used cooking oil, 15 liters of methanol, and 450 grams of NaOH produced 60 liters of biodiesel (volumetric yield of 80%) at a production cost of IDR 513,500 per batch (IDR 8,558 per liter) and a projected revenue of IDR 690,000. The 15 liters of crude glycerol residue were processed into 30 liters of liquid cleaning soap, so the process generated no new waste. The biodiesel remains a demonstration product because it has not been tested against the Indonesian National Standard SNI 7182:2015; therefore, program sustainability requires laboratory quality testing, continued mentoring, and a stronger collection system.
